Subject: SCIENCE & GOD

August 16th, 2007 by lovely-114141
"Let me explain the problem science has with God."
The atheist professor of philosophy pauses before his class and then
asks one of his new students to stand.

   "You’re a God believer, aren’t you, son?"
   "Yes sir," the student says.
   "So you believe in God?"
   "Absolutely."
   "Is God good?"
   "Sure God’s good."
"Is God all-powerful? Can God do anything?"
   "Yes."
   "Are you good or evil?"
   "The teachings says I’m evil."

The professor grins knowingly. He considers for a moment.

"Here’s one for you. Let’s say there’s a sick person over here and
you can cure him. You can do it. Would you help them? Would
   you try?"
   "Yes sir, I would."
   "So you’re good…"
   "I wouldn’t say that."
"But why not say that? You’d help a sick and maimed person if you
could.
Most of us would if we could. But God doesn’t."

The student does not answer, so the professor continues. "He doesn’t,
does he? My brother was a God believer who died of
cancer, even though he prayed to Jesus to heal him. How is this God
good?  Hmmm? Can you answer that one?"

   The student remains silent.

"No, you can’t, can you?" the professor says.

He takes a sip of water from a glass on his desk to give the student
time to relax.

"Let’s start again, young fella. Is God good?"
   "Er… Yes," the student says.
   "Is Satan good?"

The student doesn’t hesitate on this one. "No."
"Then where does Satan come from?"
   The student falters. "From… God…"
"That’s right. God made Satan, didn’t he? Tell me, son. Is there evil
in this world?"
   "Yes, sir."
"Evil’s everywhere, isn’t it? And God did make everything, correct? "

   "Yes."
   "So who created evil?"

Again, the student has no answer.

"Is there sickness? Immorality? Hatred? Ugliness.
All these terrible things, do they exist in this world?"
The student squirms on his feet. "Yes."
   "So who created them?"

The student does not answer again, so the professor repeats his
question.

   "Who created them? "

There is still no answer. Suddenly the lecturer breaks away to pace
in front of the classroom. The class is mesmerized.

"Tell me," he continues. "Do you believe in God, son?"
The student’s voice betrays him and cracks.
   "Yes,professor. I do."
The old man stops pacing. "Science says you have five senses you use
to identify and observe the world around you. Have you
   ever seen God?"
"No sir. I’ve never seen Him."
"Then tell us if you’ve ever heard your God?"
   "No, sir. I have not."
"Have you ever felt your God, tasted your God or smelt your God? Have
you ever had any sensory perception of God?
   "No, sir, I’m afraid I haven’t."
"Yet you still believe in him?" thundered the professor
   "Yes."
"According to the rules of empirical, testable, demonstrable protocol,

science says your God doesn’t exist. What do you say to that, son?

"Nothing," the student replies. "I only have my faith."
   "Yes, faith," the professor repeats.
"And that is the problem science has with God.
There  is no evidence, only  faith."

The student stands quietly for a moment, before asking a question of
his own.

"Professor, is there such thing as heat?"
"Yes," the professor replies. "There’s heat."
"And is there such a thing as cold?"
   "Yes, son, there’s cold too."
   "No sir, there isn’t."

The professor turns to face the student, obviously interested. The
room suddenly becomes very quiet. The student begins to
   explain.

"You can have lots of heat, even more heat, super-heat, mega-heat,
white heat, a little heat or no heat, but we don’t have
   anything called "cold’.
We can hit 458 degrees below zero, which is no heat, but we can’t go
any further after that. There is no such thing as cold;
otherwise we would be able to go colder than -458 degrees. You see,
sir, cold is only a word we use to describe the absence of heat. We
cannot
measure cold. Heat we can measure in thermal units because heat is
energy.
Cold is not the opposite of heat, sir, just the absence of it.

Silence across the room A pen drops somewhere in the classroom,
sounding like a hammer.

"What about darkness, professor. Is there such a thing as darkness?"
"Yes," the professor replies without hesitation.
"What is night if it isn’t darkness?"

"You’re wrong again, sir. Darkness is not something; it is the
absence of something. You can have low light, normal light,
bright light, flashing light. But if you have no light constantly
you  have nothing and it’s called darkness, isn’t it? That’s the meaning
we use to
define the word. In reality, Darkness isn’t. If it were, you would be
able to make darkness darker, wouldn’t you?"

The professor begins to smile at the student in front of him. This
will be a good semester.

"So what point are you making, young man?"
"Yes, professor. My point is, your philosophical  premise is flawed
to start with and so your conclusion must also be flawed."

The professor’s face cannot hide his surprise this time. "Flawed? Can
you explain how?"

"You are working on the premise of duality," the  student explains.
"You argue that there is life and then there’s death; a good God and
a bad God. You are viewing the concept of God as something
finite, something we can measure. Sir, science can’t even explain a
thought. It uses electricity and magnetism, but has never seen, much
less fully
understood either one. To view death as the opposite of life is to be
ignorant of the fact that death cannot exist as a substantive thing.
Death is
not the opposite of life, just the absence of it.

"Now tell me, professor. Do you teach your students that they evolved
from a monkey?"

"If you are referring to the natural evolutionary process, young
man,yes,of course I do."

"Have you ever observed evolution with your own eyes, sir?"

The professor begins to shake his head, still smiling, as he realizes
where the argument is going. A very good semester indeed

"Since no one has ever observed the process of evolution at work and
cannot even p rove that this process is an on-going
endeavour, are you not teaching your opinion, sir? Are you now not a
scientist, but  a preacher?"

The class is in uproar. The student remains silent until the
commotion has subsided.

"To continue the point you were making earlier to the other students,
let me give you an example of what I mean."

The student looks around the room. "Is there anyone in the class who
has ever seen the professor’s brain?" The class breaks
   out into laughter.

"Is there anyone here who has ever heard the professor’s brain, felt
the professor’s brain, touched or smelt the professor’s brain? No one
appears to have done so. So, according to the established rules of
empirical, testable, demonstrable protocol, science says that you have no
brain, with all due respect, s ir. So if science says you have no brain,
how can we trust your lectures, sir?"

Now the room is silent. The professor just stares at the student, his
face unreadable

Finally, after what seems an eternity, the old man answers.

"I guess you’ll have to take them on faith." The class breaks into a
deadening applause

"Continuing further, Sir, when GOD created the universe he made a set
of rules which governs every living organisms, categorized in his own
way.
For some, life is a predestined, well programmed journey of life. For
others, like humans, the rules of life are the direct results of their
own actions, words, thoughts or/and conducts. So, Sir, happiness,
sadness, good, bad, sickness, good health, poverty and abundance,  is
man’s own doing unto himself. The wrong an d bad happenings in man’s
life, is nothing but the lack of righteousness in his way of life."

It pays to have faith in God ….
Evil is not the opposite of Goodness…it is the absence.

Through Him…

August 3rd, 2007 by lovely-114141

I love music and art (I have a deep appreciation for good music).I like detail and analytical work (most of the time) but I’m also adventurous and aggressive (sometimes). I prefer to be alone or at best with one or two others, that’s why I don’t have many friends, but once I acquire one, I’m extremely loyal to him/her, faithful and dependable. I’m direct and have strong perfectionist tendencies that makes me critical of others and any imperfections, which makes me hard to get along with(sometime ago).I seek the help of the Holy Spirit to develop a loving spirit that will cause me to be less critical of others and much easier to get along with. I’m (sometimes)the motivator, exhorter in the group and I’m (sometime ago) arrogant and bossy but I don’t expect anyone else to do something he/she can’t do and I’m not easily discouraged. My worst enemy was my violent anger problem but because of Jesus and through the Holy Spirit, I gain victory over it and replace it with love, joy and peace…

Just as John said, "Yet to all who received Him, to those who believed in his name (Jesus), He gave the right to become children of God". I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. And when I say Lord, He is the Lord in all aspects of my life. Without Him, I am nothing! And I want nothing more but Him. I want to know him more, to love him more and to worship him and glorify him more and more, in all eternity. I’m so in love with Jesus! (Though you may say that I’m a Jesus freak- yes I am!)

Jesus save me from the punishment of sin, (which is death, an eternal separation from God in Hell).Jesus sets me free!(from sins’ slavery/Satan’s slavery) So, now I(we) may (freely) glorify the Father through Him!

Jesus is the (only) Way! Jesus is the Truth and Jesus is the Life! He commissioned me (and all the believers) to tell the (this) good news to the world (to those who haven’t heard it).

Jesus Christ came to restore man’s broken relationship with God. His finished work on the cross made that possible. Because of His love demonstrated on the cross by dying for our sins, we now have reason to fellowship with one another and proclaim salvation through His life and resurrection.(1 Corinthians 3:11, Ephesians 2:20, Romans 5:6-10)

It’s in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are living for. Long before we first heard of Christ,…he had his eye on us, had designs on us for glorious living, part of the overall purpose he is working out in everything and everyone. Ephesians 1:11 (Msg)

Through Jesus, I’m free! Free to do anything He wants me to do, so God may be glorified!

Through Jesus, I’ve found my purpose… have you found yours?

Blitzen at the Door

January 15th, 2006 by lovely-114141

by John Fischer

We have a little twelve-pound Chihuahua that was my wife’s Christmas present a year ago. I grimaced when I found out, a few days before Christmas, that this was what she really wanted. I was of the persuasion that real dogs are supposed to be big, but I now have to admit, this little addition to our family has brought us much joy and has become a source of boundless entertainment. Not hurting for personality, he prances about with an air of respectability that makes you not want to embarrass him by laughing in his face until you remember he is a dog and probably won’t take it personally. He has a little wrinkled brow that provides a serious addition to the humor of his antics. We called him Blitzen because we heard he was a reindeer-head Chihuahua and he came to us at Christmastime, but Reepicheep, the serious little mouse in the Chronicles of Narnia would also suit his character well.

Lately, Blitzen has taken to exhibiting a strange behavior that has him refusing to come in the front door, as if some invisible force is preventing him from entering the house. It works the same way going out. He will stop short of the door and no amount of coaxing will get him across the threshold. We have to pick him up and carry him.

It’s both comical and pathetic to watch him sitting there whining and shaking with desire to cross, but completely unable to overcome whatever unseen barrier it is that he imagines. You can get down on your hands and knees as little as two feet away, and beg him to come to you, but he won’t. Perhaps some bad experience — whether getting caught in the door or slipping on the floor just inside — has become frozen in his memory, but he cannot shake it.

I am convinced God has given us pets to see the silly things we do, and in this case, I can’t help but see my own fears when he does this. What are those thresholds in my life that I can’t cross because of some imaginary fear or bad experience from the past that haunts me? More often than not, our fears are just like this — invisible barriers to faith that keep us from moving on in our lives. Satan is a real force, and he can set difficult things in our paths, but I rather think that most of the time he locks us up in the smoke and mirrors of our imaginations.

If Blitzen would just take one step out, he would find there is nothing to fear, and not only that, there are strong, loving hands waiting for him on the other side. In such situations, our moving ahead in faith (and finding the same results, I might add) isn’t any more complicated than that.

I’m on an island at a busy intersection
I can’t go forward. I can’t turn back
Can’t see the future
It’s getting away from me
I just watch the tail lights glowing

One step closer to knowing
One step closer to knowing

Antidote to Perfection

January 15th, 2006 by lovely-114141

by John Fischer

There’s one thing that, more than anything, will cure the tendency we all have to appear like we have it all together when we don’t, and that would be a close relationship. You just can’t fake it with a real friend.

I wish we didn’t have to do this to ourselves. We just don’t seem to be able to let go of this need to look like we are better than we are. We walk on water. We have perfect children. God and us are just like this… Humbug.

Here’s what we all know, but rarely take advantage of: You can fool some people, but you can’t fool everybody; and the ones you can’t fool are your best friends. (I suppose you could turn that around and say if you are successfully fooling everybody, you probably don’t have any close relationships, and if that’s the case, you might want to do something about that.)

In a staff meeting recently, Kay Warren (her husband is that guy who authored The Purpose Driven Life) shared that when she was suffering through the long night of her cancer, her closest friends were the ones that she could tell, “I don’t get it. I don’t get God’s system — whatever He’s supposedly teaching me here. I don’t get why I have to learn it this way.” And she remembers now that all they could say at the time was, “I don’t get it either, but God is good.”

That’s a pretty good response, actually. Job could have used a friend like this instead of the ones he had who were constantly trying out their latest theological theory on his situation while he had to live through the real suffering. Sometimes all you can say is: “Yeah, life is hard but God is good.” Or as my kids would say it: “Life sucks but God doesn’t.”

But going back to our antidote… we don’t even get this far if we are not honest. If we’re not honest, we’re not going to get any real help, and we’re not going to have any real friends. Canadian folksinger Bruce Cockburn has a line in one of his songs about kicking at the darkness. I believe this is what a good friend does — sits up with you in your misery and kicks at your darkness. It may not help much, but it’s flesh and blood communion. God does touch us in invisible ways, but he uses people, too, and no one’s going to be able to do this for us if we don’t let anyone close enough to know what we are really going through.

So let’s stop boring each other with our supposedly perfect lives, and get down to the godly business of having and being friends who really care.
